Abstract

This article examines the evolution of classical Punjabi popular literature into modern graphic novels, and considers how these retellings intervene in processes of myth-making and cultural inheritance. Punjabi folklore, which is replete with tales of bravery, romance and wars fought against all odds has been the producer of great traditional literature that used to be written as well spoken. But in recent years, graphic novels have become a new way of recounting these tales, combining visuals and words to attract a wider audience than the traditional course book would. I explore the adaptation, re-imagining of traditional myths, and preservation of cultural elements as graphic novels retell or remix each specific myth in contemporary times. Working primarily with selected Punjabi graphic novels, this research seeks to answer the following questions: How do contemporary graphic novelists interpret and harden classical folklore? Which cultural aspects are retained or modified in the process of adapting? Why are graphic novels a good way to tell these sorts of stories in this day and age? The article illustrates the importance of comic books and graphic novels in the retention and transformation of classical myths, giving considerable insight into cultural change in the modern world.
